I just finished piecing the last of the new quilts last week and am in the midst of binding a bunch of them. (More about those soon.) </p></blockquote><blockquote><p>In the meantime, I've been getting a few messages asking about the coordinating solids for <i><a href="https://lellaboutique.blogspot.com/2021/01/christmas-morning.html" target="_blank">Christmas Morning</a></i>. If you plan on adding <a href="https://lellaboutique.blogspot.com/2021/01/christmas-morning.html" target="_blank"><i>Christmas Morning fabric</i></a> to your stash, you may want to bookmark this post for reference later. This collection will sell out and once it does, it is helpful to know what solids (and near-solids) coordinate in case you find yourself needing to purchase matching yardage (and can't find any of the original collection).</p></blockquote><blockquote><p style="text-align: center;"><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://lellaboutique.blogspot.com/2021/01/christmas-morning.html" target="_blank" title="CMcharm"><img alt="CMcharm" height="800" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50792497488_64b78c0ba7_c.jpg" width="570" /></a></p></blockquote><blockquote><p>As always, the collection already contains a few prints that read like solids and are great as backgrounds like the "Magic Dot" print or "Comfort" print (both green swatches below are an example). Of course, those sell out pretty quickly so it is still helpful to keep track of what other solids coordinate. This time around, there are four Moda Bella solids and one BasicGrey "Grunge" print I recommend. You will notice that the "Circa Celadon" green solid is not an exact match to the collection... This is because there wasn't an exact match BUT the Circa Celadon looks great with the group overall. There are a range of greys within the collection; the "Gris" Grunge ties them all together well (while adding beautiful texture).</p></blockquote><blockquote><p style="text-align: center;"><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/59755409@N08/50792497488/in/dateposted/" title="CMcharm"></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>

I reprinted a couple of my bestselling pattern oldies in <i>Smoke & Rust</i> fabric and need to show you how they turned out!<div><br /></div><div>First up is <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/smoke-rust/products/130-hot-cross-buns-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">Hot Cross Buns</a>. It's also the <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/5-pattern-of-the-month" target="_blank">$5 pattern</a> in November--just a few more days to snag a copy! I have made this quilt previously in several fabric collections, but this is the best one yet. Make it with a Jelly Roll (30 precut 2.5" strips) or a Layer Cake (30 precut 10" squares). I've tweaked a few things in the instructions from the original and made it even better than before. The pattern is available in <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/smoke-rust/products/130-hot-cross-buns-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">PDF</a> or <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/smoke-rust/products/130-hot-cross-buns-paper-pattern" target="_blank">printed booklet</a> format.</div><div><br /></div>

I've already begun cutting it out, took me less than an hour. Be sure to snag this one for $5 while you can.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/smoke-rust/products/130-hot-cross-buns-paper-pattern" target="_blank" title="kit"><img alt="kit" height="800" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50645497791_81fbddf5c2_c.jpg" width="598" /></a></div><div><br /></div>
The other pattern that got an update is <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/smoke-rust/products/162-trinkets-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">Trinkets</a>. This one is made with 16 fat quarters and is available as a <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/smoke-rust/products/162-trinkets-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">PDF</a> or <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/smoke-rust/products/162-trinkets-paper-pattern" target="_blank">printed booklet</a>. This quilt has lived in my heart for a very long time. Having been around mountains nearly all my life, I am gaga over them. I've lived near Zion National Park the last 5.5 years--which is where the color inspiration for the Smoke & Rust fabric originated. <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/5-pattern-of-the-month/products/189-kiss-makeup-hanging-travel-bag-paper-pattern" target="_blank"><img alt="dd" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49899708642_49e4e54dff_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
The Bloomington collection has hit shops... and with it, Moda added something a little extra--coated prints! In case you're wondering, <b>coated prints = cotton prints coated with a laminate layer</b>. (I'll use the terms "coated prints" and "laminates" interchangeably.) As you might guess, laminates come with their own set of rules, so today I'm sharing a few tips and tricks about working with laminates in general.</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/5-pattern-of-the-month/products/189-kiss-makeup-hanging-travel-bag-paper-pattern" target="_blank"><img alt="cc" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49899400346_8bf8287311_z.jpg" width="611" /></a><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
One of the perks of working with laminates is they are extra durable and easier to clean than traditional quilting cotton. This makes them ideal for bag making, which is why I came up with my first ever bag pattern, <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/5-pattern-of-the-month/products/189-kiss-makeup-hanging-travel-bag-paper-pattern" target="_blank">Kiss & Makeup, the hanging travel bag you see here</a>.</blockquote>
</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
Sewing with laminates comes with a different set of rules than working with regular cotton prints. Let's talk about some of those special tools you should invest in to sew with them. As it turns out, they make a HUGE difference in the quality of how your projects turn out. Most (but not all) of the tools I'm about to mention are pictured below.</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="coated prints" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49899397156_3c4b45aff1_c.jpg" /><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
<b><u>Polyester thread.</u></b> I didn't think it would make much of a difference what type of thread I used, but it did. I initially used a high quality Aurifil cotton thread I had on hand. I was surprised to find the stitching looked uneven and messy. I switched to the Mettler brand polyester and had a visibly nicer result. Because the <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/5-pattern-of-the-month/products/189-kiss-makeup-hanging-travel-bag-paper-pattern" target="_blank">Kiss & Makeup bag</a> has a lot of top-stitching (an example below), it was important to me that the stitching look as nice as possible.</blockquote>
<img alt="j" height="400" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49898882858_d2e64c53bc_z.jpg" width="390" /><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
<b><u>Teflon/Non-stick Sewing Foot.</u></b> Laminates have a tendency to stick to your sewing machine. One source of resistance is the machine's standard metal feet; look for a non-stick Teflon foot to invest in. Mine is Bernina's "Zigzag foot #52." You will want to research what Teflon non-stick foot is available/compatible with your specific sewing machine. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
<b><u>Tissue paper.</u></b> Another source of resistance is the bottom of the project--it will stick to the sewing machine bed and feed dogs. To remedy this, place a scrap of tissue paper underneath the project. This will help it glide through smoothly. Yes, I'm suggesting you sew the tissue paper to the bottom of the project. It sounds like a strange thing to do, but it's really not a big deal. Just tear the tissue paper away afterwards and discard.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
<b><u><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Clover-Wonder-Clips-Red-50-Pack/dp/B004ZKPX8A/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=wonder+clips&qid=1589601563&sr=8-9" target="_blank">Wonder Clips.</a></u></b> Because laminates/vinyl retain holes from pinning, one great way to avoid this is to use binding clips to hold the layers in place. I used them almost exclusively for all my pinning needs in my bag project.</blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="aa" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49898883498_e6769a2ac1_z.jpg" width="628" /><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
<b><u><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Dritz-3310-Wonder-4-Inch-10-Yards/dp/B004BP0D3O/ref=pd_lpo_201_t_0/130-0293985-3692773?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B004BP0D3O&pd_rd_r=264a79ba-1b21-4885-88c2-26c2b5aab603&pd_rd_w=sZ1GN&pd_rd_wg=ddsLX&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=84HT59V8WHVKGE7MNZWJ&psc=1&refRID=84HT59V8WHVKGE7MNZWJ" target="_blank">1/4" Wonder Tape.</a></u></b> There were a couple exceptions where I couldn't use Wonder Clips to 'pin' things in place for the project... One example came in positioning the zippered pockets in place on the bag lining as seen above. The Wonder Clips held everything in place at the sides, but I needed something to "glue" the bound areas of each pocket down. This is where <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Dritz-3310-Wonder-4-Inch-10-Yards/dp/B004BP0D3O/ref=pd_lpo_201_t_0/130-0293985-3692773?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B004BP0D3O&pd_rd_r=264a79ba-1b21-4885-88c2-26c2b5aab603&pd_rd_w=sZ1GN&pd_rd_wg=ddsLX&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=84HT59V8WHVKGE7MNZWJ&psc=1&refRID=84HT59V8WHVKGE7MNZWJ" target="_blank">Wonder Tape</a> came in handy. Since Wonder Tape is a double-sided adhesive, I added a skinny strip underneath the bound edges in place so I could stitch them down. And Wonder Tape dissolves after being washed (in case that matters to you, I felt it was a moot point here since the skinny 1/4" width remains out-of-sight).</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<b><u><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Euro-Notions-Schmetz-Microtex-Machine-Needles/dp/B000YZ5LIM/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=microtex+needle&qid=1589601530&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Microtex Needle.</a></u></b> This sewing machine needle is extra thin and sharp. It's a game changer for working with laminates. It penetrates the layers easily and was another factor in making the stitching look clean and clear... which I learned the hard way through testing, of course.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<b><u><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Clover-490-NV-Hera-Marker/dp/B0011451F8/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=hera+marker&qid=1589601449&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Hera Marker.</a></u></b> Some laminate projects require markings to be made. If yours does, consider using a <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Clover-490-NV-Hera-Marker/dp/B0011451F8/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=hera+marker&qid=1589601449&sr=8-1" target="_blank">hera marker</a> to make your markings. (It marks creases instead of ink.) Ordinarily, I love using a Frixion (heat removable) pen for markings, but ironing laminates is a no-no...</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Which bring me to the last topic I want to discuss: <b><u>PRESSING</u></b>.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
First things first, <b>DON'T directly iron a laminate</b>, it will melt. IF you need to remove wrinkles, use a low heat setting over the BACK (cotton side) of the laminate. All laminates are going to be slightly different in the level of heat they can handle. The Moda brand gave me no problems when it came to removing wrinkles, but every manufacturer is different. I was actually able to add a light shot of steam to help remove the wrinkles and spent probably 4-5 seconds over each wrinkled area at the most. (I didn't need longer than that.) It would be best to test a scrap of your laminate to see what level of heat it can handle. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
When it comes to pressing seams or creating folds, you can use weight or <a href="https://www.fatquartershop.com/quick-press-seam-roller-by-lori-holt-of-bee-in-my-bonnet" target="_blank">a seam roller</a>. Wonder Clips can also be helpful, especially when it comes to bindings. The <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/5-pattern-of-the-month/products/189-kiss-makeup-hanging-travel-bag-paper-pattern" target="_blank">Kiss & Makeup bag</a> involves binding the edges of zippers, vinyl pockets, and eventually the perimeter of the bag It would have been ideal to use an iron in creating the binding creases, but obviously wasn't an option. Instead, I used a combination of weight + Wonder Clips to create and hold the binding shut.</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="e" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49898882978_6b8175139d_z.jpg" width="625" /><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
And that's it. I can't emphasize enough the importance of each of these tools. I made at least 6 tester bags to test all of these tools and can personally attest to the effectiveness of having the right tools for the best looking end-product. </blockquote>

I get a lot of inquiries re: the Moda Bella Solids/Grunge coordinates, so I've included a list below... Keep in mind there are already a couple great basics built into the <i>Folktale</i> collection! Add a little extra sparkle to your backgrounds with the sweet multicolor "Magic Dot" print, or consider using the "Skinny Stripes" for sashing, accent blocks, borders, and bindings. They are a pretty sweet near-solid option that already matches the group perfectly.</blockquote>

This was my first time using coated prints (aka laminated cottons). Coated prints are wonderful for bag-making since they're durable and easy to clean. These Bloomington coated prints have a matte finish and are excellent quality. I'll admit, I was intimidated using them at first since I'd never worked with laminates of any kind. I did a lot of experimenting and ended up loving the quality. If you'd like to use coated prints for your bag--I've shared all the good information right in the pattern. I'll also be sharing tips + tricks on the blog this month. Of course, you can use anything you'd like to make this bag--cotton, canvas, coated prints--or a mix!</blockquote>

<blockquote class="tr_bq">
The <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/5-pattern-of-the-month/products/188-cathedral-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">Cathedral</a> quilt pattern has a look reminiscent of a fancy black and white tile pattern. There is a solid component to it (I used Moda Bella Solid in "Lead"), a diamond accent (I used the skinny bias stripe from the collection), and then alternating blocks made with either 5 half-yard cuts or 10 fat quarters. Your choice will depend on how scrappy and colorful you'd like yours to be. I made both versions. The charcoal version below uses 5 half-yards (5 assorted charcoal prints from the collection). My home has a farmhouse sort of feel, so this fits right in with the overall charcoal theme!</blockquote>

<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
Below is a full mock up of the colorful version using 10 fat quarters. I kept the solid/diamond accents the same in both quilts. As you can see, each fat quarter print yields enough to be used twice. The charcoal gives high contrast to the design, but you can pick any color you'd like!</blockquote>

Happy Wednesday! I've had a great time sewing along for Moda Blockheads 3 so far, and am happy it's my turn to share a block. If you're new to my blog--welcome!</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
Meet <a href="http://www.unitednotions.com/BH3_9-Vanessa-Goertzen-Taos.pdf" target="_blank">block no. 9 "Taos."</a> This block was inspired by countless trips to New Mexico since I was a little--and most particularly, my favorite stop at the Taos Pueblo. <blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
The fabrics I've picked make it look a bit like a spunky little sunflower! The buttery yellows are from my <i><a href="https://lellaboutique.blogspot.com/2017/05/farmers-daughter.html" target="_blank">Farmer's Daughter</a></i> collection; the skinny bias stripe in charcoal is from my upcoming <i><a href="https://lellaboutique.blogspot.com/2019/10/bloomington-fabric.html" target="_blank">Bloomington</a></i> collection (shipping in April). I think you'll agree it's a versatile block.</blockquote>

<blockquote class="tr_bq">
The instructions Moda wrote for me are pretty straightforward and easy to follow. I deviated a bit in how I constructed the block... In a nutshell, I made my HSTs (half squares triangles) using a different method; I also tweaked the center unit construction for fewer seams. Of course, you should do whatever makes the most sense for you.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
If you're interested, here's the rundown of how I made mine--and how to calculate the math for whichever block size you're making if you'd like to follow suit. I made the 6" finished version, so I will use that as the example.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">

<blockquote class="tr_bq">
1. Cut "A" and "B" squares <a href="http://www.unitednotions.com/BH3_9-Vanessa-Goertzen-Taos.pdf" target="_blank">as instructed</a>. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
2. For "C" and "D" cutting, add 1/8" to the square measurement listed. (For my 6" finished block, I cut (4) "C" and (4) "D" squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" each.) <u>Do not cut them in half diagonally.</u></blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
3. Instead, mark a diagonal line on the back of (4) "C" squares. Bring (1) marked "C" square right sides together with (1) "D" square, aligning raw edges. <u>Sew 1/4" away from the marked line on both sides</u>, cut along the marked line, and press the resulting HSTs toward the darker print.</blockquote>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<blockquote class="tr_bq">
4. Trim each HST to match your "A" and "B" squares. For me, that meant trimming my HSTs to 2" squares. (Each was approx. 2 1/8" x 2 1/8" prior to trimming.)</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
5. Cut "E" squares <a href="http://www.unitednotions.com/BH3_9-Vanessa-Goertzen-Taos.pdf" target="_blank">as instructed</a>. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
6. Cut only (4) "F" squares... </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
7. ...and replace the remaining "F" squares with [what I'm calling] (2) "G" squares--each cut the same size as the "A" and "B" squares.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
8. In lieu of "Step #3" on the pattern download piecing instructions: Arrange and sew the "E/F" squares into (2) four-patch units. Next, sew the (2) "E/F" units together with the (2) "G" squares to form another four-patch as shown below. Sew the units into rows; press. Sew the rows together; press.</blockquote>

Who doesn't love a scrappy herringbone quilt? Here's my take on the traditional pattern, made with (1) Honeybun (42 strips cut 1.5" x WOF) + fat quarters for the larger parallelogram blocks. Because <a href="https://lellaboutique.com/collections/bloomington-1/products/187-modern-herringbone-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">Modern Herringbone</a> is made of parallelogram shapes (a template is included to help you cut them), it requires the very piecing technique you would use for piecing triangles or diamonds. Who's ready for Moda Blockheads 3?! The fun begins this Wednesday 1/15/20.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
If you're new to Moda Blockheads--this is a popular (free) block-of-the-week sampler sew along put together by a bunch of us Moda designers. 56 weeks = 56 blocks, and this year you get to choose the size of each block you make. That's right. The block of the week will include instructions to finish at 4", 6", 8", or 12". Pretty cool!</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
But how will you decide what to make? Good question. We Moda designers are already headed off in different directions. We're sharing our quilt top layouts ahead of time to give you as many ideas as possible. I'm keeping my layout somewhat simple with what I'm calling "Mama's Linoleum Layout."</blockquote>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
Before we get started with the layout, I want to point out that each Mama's Linoleum block contains a 12" x 12" finished block in the center. This center section is where you will insert your MB3 sampler blocks! You may use a combination of sampler block sizes to fill this section as long it equals 12" x 12" finished (12.5" x 12.5" unfinished). Let's take a closer look at what these combinations may look like.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
Option #1 is the easiest and most obvious. Just plug in a 12" x 12" finished MB3 sampler block. This is a great option for someone who wants to participate in MB3 (but may not be able to afford the weekly time commitment).</blockquote>
<img alt="12inch" height="200" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50013352132_2e7e5ca400.jpg" width="198" /><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="text-align: left;">
Option #2: Plug in (4) 6" x 6" finished MB3 sampler blocks to equal 12" x 12" finished. (This is the route I'm taking for all of my blocks.)</div>
</blockquote>
<img alt="6inch" height="200" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50012562203_f35cc52bb6.jpg" width="199" /><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
Option #3: Plug in (9) 4" x 4" finished sampler blocks to equal 12" x 12" finished.</blockquote>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="4inch" height="200" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50013352197_bf93102b6c.jpg" width="199" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">
Option #4: Combine (1) 8" x 8" finished sampler block + (5) 4" x 4" finished sampler blocks.</blockquote>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://lellaboutique.blogspot.com/2020/01/moda-blockheads-3-layout.html" title="mixedinch"><img alt="mixedinch" height="200" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50013352097_4b842f5bb9.jpg" width="199" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: left;">

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas over at my house! This year I actually planned ahead and finished all of my Christmas shopping so I can enjoy the season and sew Christmas projects to my heart's content. It does not matter that they won't be ready in time for the holiday--there's just something so special about working on Christmas projects that gets me in the holiday mood.
