Little Tree

Little Tree fabric by Lella Boutique
There is a magical charm in the air at Christmas time. Picture a fresh blanket of snow, a snow-kissed tree decorated with flowers and ribbon, and plenty of snuggles in handmade quilts. This Little Tree collection is a piece of my Christmas-loving heart. With it, you can deck your halls (and beds) in sweet poetry, red and white poinsettias, mistletoe, farmhouse stripes, embossed tin, and of course--little trees.
Little Tree by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics will begin shipping to shops in May 2019. One of my favorite things about this group is a giant Christmas quilt panel ready to be quilted, bound, and loved.
Little Tree Panel
Quilt it as-is, incorporate it into a backing--or make it even bigger with a border! I'm thinking I'd like to add a scrappy block border to one. Stay tuned for that--I've got another year, right? ;) Oh and the pretty edge-to-edge quilting you see here is by Natalia Bonner

Moda Blockheads: {Block 31} Interstellar

Good morning, fellow Blockheads!
Things have been pretty hectic lately with new fabric and new quilt patterns--I hope you'll check them out in previous posts!
 Lollipop Garden fabricDiamond Dust quilt
Today I have a new block for you called Interstellar. If you are new to curved piecing, this is a great way to get your feet wet. It's not as difficult as you think and is very forgiving. Here's my mockup for the block using my Garden Variety fabric--just arriving in shops!

You can download the free pattern here. Please note there is a correction--Square H should be 1 3/4'' x 1 3/4''. Thanks for stopping by!

Lollipop Garden {The Projects}

Lollipop Garden quilts
Time for a new batch of quilts using Lollipop Garden fabric. But first--I'm offering a discount--get 20% off in my shop using promo code LOLLIPOP20 now through 11.10.18 at checkout. Now for the quilts!
LB174 BLING Cover
This pattern came about because of Moda Blockheads-- a fun block-of-the-week program featuring free blocks from Moda designers such as myself. This is a modified version of my Impact block from that. Make this quilt with fat eighths or fat quarters, then set it on point with side/corner triangles in your favorite accent color. (I've used an aqua print from the collection.)
Bling quilt
Marion Bott quilted everything this time around and she did a fabulous job. She has an amazing eye for picking out the perfect pantograph and scaling it densely--just how I like it!
This is my first pattern using mini charm packs... about time! If you're like me, I've collected oodles of those sweet little mini charm packs over the years, but never really knew what to use them for. This 4'' version of my Open Heart block really fit the bill. One of my favorite things about this project is that 1 mini charm pack will make 3 pin cushions (including a scrappy patchwork back!). It's also fun to challenge yourself and make something with teeny pieces like this. Gives one bragging rights, don't you think?
Mini Open Heart Pin Cushion
LB176 Butterfly Patch COVER
This one was inspired by my Social Butterfly pattern--still one of my bestselling pattern since its release back in early 2015. This time around, I've enlarged that sweet butterfly shape and filled it in with beginner-level blocks for a sampler-sort of feel. This one was very quick to put together and is made with 1 Layer Cake of Lollipop Garden fabric. Moda will be offering this in a special boxed kit.

LB177 Diamond Dust COVER
Lately, I have been absolutely smitten with teeny tiny pieces. There is something just wonderful about the feeling you get after making something with small pieces.  This is my favorite quilt of the bunch, and the smallest of squares in this finish at 1/2''. They key with this one is paying attention to the seam allowance (for consistency) and pressing the seams carefully. (I use a lot of steam so I took care to handle it minimally so it wouldn't warp.) But just look at that quilting! I'm smitten.
Diamond Dust quilt
This one can be made with 2 charm packs. Or 6 mini charm packs. Or 9 fat eighths. Or scraps. Choose anything you'd like really. Your precuts don't even need to be of the same collection as this design does not rely on that. You can also choose to do an all-white background like I did, or opt for a fun checkerboard design using a favorite print. I haven't made a checkerboard one yet, but it's definitely in the plan. I'm thinking it could be a super cute boy quilt if I stick to just boyish colors. What do you think?

LB178 Square Dance COVER
This one makes me think of the scrappy quilts I used to see at Grandma's house when I was young.  It's funny how quilting has changed--we buy yardage now, but Grandma's quilts would carry bits of old aprons or dresses. Whatever they could find, really. Square Dance has a similar hodgepodge sort of charm and is made with 1 Jelly Roll.

What do you think? Do you have a favorite? All the pattern are available now in PDF or paper and the fabric collection will ship to shops April 2019.

Lollipop Garden

"If I had a flower for every time I thought of you, I could walk in my garden forever." -Alfred Lord Tennyson
The highlight of my childhood summers was visiting my grandmother's ranch in the Colorado mountains. A walk through her rustic yard was to know her heart.  A profusion of flowers and raspberry bushes laden with sweet fruit drew butterflies, filling the garden with color.  In the evening, we would fall asleep watching a tangerine sky go dark, then awaken to diamond-dust sunbeams dancing across the room.
Lollipop Garden is a scrapbook of those lovely days.
Lollipop Garden by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics is showing at International Quilt Market in Houston, TX Nov 3-5 2018 and will ship to shops April 2019.

Moda Blockheads: Round 2 {Block 8}

Okay I did a pretty major deviation this week. Block number 8 is "Pineapple" by the lovely Jan Patek. It is an adorable applique block--make sure you go check it out on her website here. I'm hoping to get that appliqued block made when I got more time to figure out how to do applique :)
In the meantime, Corey Yoder has designed an alternate (pieced) version, so I whipped this cute little pink pineapple as a placeholder using her instructions. It sure is cute! Get free instructions for Corey's pieced alternative here.
Fabrics are Little Miss Sunshine (navy background), Sugar Pie (green), and Garden Variety (pink) for Moda Fabrics.

Moda Blockhead: Round 2 {Block 6}

Today's block (no. 6) is "Path Thru the Woods" by Betsy Chutchian. Get the instructions on her blog here.
I went super simple with mine, fabric is the text print from Farmer's Daughter with a Nest background. I'm wanting mine to read near-solid without actually being such. Because I'm using so many colors, I want it to feel as clean in contrast as possible. Just my preference.
If you're just getting started, check out my original post here for Basic Instructions and an archive of blocks released thusfar.

Moda Blockheads: Round 2 {Block 5}

If you're new here, welcome! I'm Vanessa Goertzen, the designer behind Lella Boutique fabrics for Moda and newbie to the Moda Blockheads design team. I'm sharing Block no. 5 today and it's a big one (24'' x 24'' finished). Meet Block no. 5 "Impact."
Impact finished block
This is what happens when flying geese crash. Boom! Instructions for the block are found here. You can see a couple different color placement options for mine, but of course there are many more. I can't wait to see how ya'll interpret this block. My fabric is Garden Variety--my newest collection shipping in October.
When I first designed this Impact block, I liked the idea of making more blocks and putting them into a full quilt. Which you could totally do as is. But I started playing around, making a few alterations the block, and eventually came up with the "Bling" quilt in Lollipop Garden fabrics. With fewer flying geese, the Bling block is slightly smaller (20'' x 20'' finished) and features an accent square in the center. The full quilt is 84 1/2'' x 84 1/2'' set on point and can be made using 26 fat eighths or 13 fat quarters. PDF pattern is available here.

Block no. 3 is rolling out today! It's called "Pennsylvania" by Carrie Nelson and is easy as pie. Get instructions over on the Moda Cutting Table for this one. Mine uses a few prints from the Sugar Pie collection--I'm going for near-solid look for my 6'' finished blocks.

Intro to Moda Blockheads {Round 2}

Yep, I'm a Blockhead. You know...a Moda Blockhead? You still don't know what I'm talking about? Okay, okay, here's a quick rundown of what you need to know:
1. Moda Blockheads is a free block-of-the-week program hosted by Moda and some of its designers. Last year was Round 1, hosted by the 6 original "Blockheads" (Lynne, Betsy, Jo, Jan, Lisa, and Carrie). Round 2 begins today with an expanded Moda designer pool of 13... I'm thrilled to be one of the newbies!
2. Sew along with us, and eventually you'll have a pretty special sampler quilt. It's a surprise layout, though of course, you can set your blocks any way you'd like.
3. Follow the Moda Blockhead Facebook page or subscribe to the Moda blog to get the weekly instructions as they are released.. I will also be posting when I can, but refer to this post for basic instructions and links to all blocks as they are released (scroll to the bottom of this post)
I'm using a happy little rainbow for my quilt--scraps of several of my past and current collections: Garden Variety, Nest, Farmer's Daughter, Sugar Pie, Olive's Flower Market, and Little Miss Sunshine too. It's going to be terrific. If you're buying fabric for this project, I'd start out with a fat quarter bundle, 5 yards of a background, and go from there. Because there are so many blocks, so many liberties you can take, it's hard to give an exact amount, but that's a good starting place.
To get started, Block #1 is Stellar Star by Lynne... (go to Lynne's blog here for instructions). I've departed from suggested placement (which is half the fun).
Thanks for stopping by! Here is an archive of all the basic instructions and the blocks:

Garden Variety {The Projects}

It's in full bloom... meet Garden Variety--my newest collection for Moda Fabrics. It ships in October, but you can reserve a bundle now by talking to your local quilt shop. Ready to see the new projects?!
Cottontail quilt
The first quilt is called "Cottontail"--a nickname my Grandpa had for me when I was small. Of course it features sweet rabbits and carrots all fenced in--and does not required any paper piecing or templates! It finishes at 84 1/2'' x 84 1/2'' and is made with a combination of fat quarters and fat eighths for the rabbit and carrot blocks. Also- Moda will be offering this as a boxed kit!

Custom quilting by Natalia Bonner

(NOTE: A single bunny block version of this pattern is also available called #169 Little Cottontail and includes finishing instructions for a wall hanging or pillow... You may remember the post about it here.)
I originally mocked this quilt up with a darker background and love how it makes those pastel bunnies pop. (Fabric is Grunge in Grey Couture by BasicGrey for Moda.) Which version do you like best?

Chandelier 2
I'm also releasing a sequel to what has been the most popular quilt from my book Charm School--18 Quilts from 5'' Squares (C&T Publishing). Chandelier 2 uses 1 Jelly Roll ( or 1 Layer Cake) and comes together quickly--just like its sister design.

Pretty Please
One of my favorite things about this Garden Variety fabric collection is the green. It is THE PRETTIEST green. (I got confirmation of this when I discovered it matches Joanna Gaines' colander at Target.) Of course I had to highlight it in one of the quilts as background! Check out the skinny stripe in green as background to "Pretty Please"--made with 1 charm pack and a few accent bits of yardage.

Long-arm quilting by JC Quilting (Juri Strong & Ciera Strong)

Pretty Please is a charm pack pattern with instructions for 2 size options. Make it a 60'' x 60'' quilt from 1 charm pack--or go big at 84'' x 84'' with 2 charm packs.
Pretty Please quilt
Holland quilt
Finally, no garden is complete without flowers. "Holland" is my take on a two-tone tulip using beginner curved piecing technique. There are two versions of the quilt: multicolor made with fat quarters, or a simplified version using yardage. This would make a really great class on beginner curved piecing. (Templates included.)
For both of these quilts, I use BasicGrey's Grunge for the background. For the simplified version, I used "Grey Couture"; for the multicolor version, I used "Picnic."
For the rest of May, get 25% off all patterns in my shop using the promo code GARDENVARIETY25 at checkout. Also, orders over $25 will include a mini charm pack.
