Moda Blockheads: Round 2 {Block 3}

3
Block no. 3 is rolling out today! It's called "Pennsylvania" by Carrie Nelson and is easy as pie. Get instructions over on the Moda Cutting Table for this one. Mine uses a few prints from the Sugar Pie collection--I'm going for near-solid look for my 6'' finished blocks.
 And as always, if you're new to Moda Blockheads, head over to my introductory post here (including links to basic instructions and all blocks thus far)

Moda Blockheads: Round 2 {Block 2}

Good morning! Block no. 2 was released today! "Buckeye Beauty" is designed by Me & My Sister Designs. Instructions for the block are available on their blog. I've used the main floral from my new Garden Variety group (available in October), with a tonal white background print from Nest (available in shops now).

Intro to Moda Blockheads {Round 2}

Blockhead1
Yep, I'm a Blockhead. You know...a Moda Blockhead? You still don't know what I'm talking about? Okay, okay, here's a quick rundown of what you need to know:
1. Moda Blockheads is a free block-of-the-week program hosted by Moda and some of its designers. Last year was Round 1, hosted by the 6 original "Blockheads" (Lynne, Betsy, Jo, Jan, Lisa, and Carrie). Round 2 begins today with an expanded Moda designer pool of 13... I'm thrilled to be one of the newbies!
2. Sew along with us, and eventually you'll have a pretty special quilt sampler. It's a surprise layout, though though of course, you can do whatever you'd like!
3. Follow the Moda Blockhead Facebook page or subscribe to the Moda blog to get the weekly instructions as they are released.. I will also be posting each week with the links to follow. Additionally, I've added a nice little archive--basic instructions and links to all released blocks at the bottom of this post
I'm using a happy little rainbow for my quilt--scraps of several of my past and current collections: Garden Variety, Nest, Farmer's Daughter, Sugar Pie, Olive's Flower Market, and Little Miss Sunshine too. It's going to be terrific. If you're buying fabric for this project, I'd start out with a fat quarter bundle, 5 yards of a background, and go from there. Because there are so many blocks, so many liberties you can take, it's hard to give an exact amount, but that's a good starting place.

Block #1 is Stellar Star by Lynne... (go to Lynne's blog here for instructions). I've departed from suggested placement (which is half the fun).

Garden Variety {The Projects}

It's in full bloom... meet Garden Variety--my newest collection for Moda Fabrics. It ships in October, but you can reserve a bundle now by talking to your local quilt shop. Ready to see the new projects?!

Cottontail
Cottontail quilt
The first quilt is called "Cottontail"--a nickname my Grandpa had for me when I was small. Of course it features sweet rabbits and carrots all fenced in--and does not required any paper piecing or templates! It finishes at 84 1/2'' x 84 1/2'' and is made with a combination of fat quarters and fat eighths for the rabbit and carrot blocks. Also- Moda will be offering this as a boxed kit!

(NOTE: A single bunny block version of this pattern is also available called #169 Little Cottontail and includes finishing instructions for a wall hanging or pillow... You may remember the post about it here.)
I originally mocked this quilt up with a darker background and love how it makes those pastel bunnies pop. (Fabric is Grunge in Grey Couture by BasicGrey for Moda.) Which version do you like best?

Chandelier 2
I'm also releasing a sequel to what has been the most popular quilt from my book Charm School--18 Quilts from 5'' Squares (C&T Publishing). Chandelier 2 uses 1 Jelly Roll ( or 1 Layer Cake) and comes together quickly--just like its sister design.

Pretty Please
One of my favorite things about this Garden Variety fabric collection is the green. It is THE PRETTIEST green. (I got confirmation of this when I discovered it matches Joanna Gaines' colander at Target.) Of course I had to highlight it in one of the quilts as background! Check out the skinny stripe in green as background to "Pretty Please"--made with 1 charm pack and a few accent bits of yardage.

Pretty Please is a charm pack pattern with instructions for 2 size options. Make it a 60'' x 60'' quilt from 1 charm pack--or go big at 84'' x 84'' with 2 charm packs.

Holland
Holland quilt
Finally, no garden is complete without flowers. "Holland" is my take on a two-tone tulip using beginner curved piecing technique. There are two versions of the quilt: multicolor made with fat quarters, or a simplified version using yardage. This would make a really great class on beginner curved piecing. (Templates included.)

For both of these quilts, I use BasicGrey's Grunge for the background. For the simplified version, I used "Grey Couture"; for the multicolor version, I used "Picnic."

Garden Variety

Garden Variety
Rain has fallen, seeds have been planted, and bees are buzzing as they meander from flower to flower. The garden is in full bloom. There is splendid harmony found in a garden bed; a juxtaposition of beauty and growth mingled with weeds and brambles. Like a real garden, you will find a variety of textures and sun-kissed colors in this collection--along with a few brambles too! Pick your favorites and see what you can grow in your fabric garden.
Garden Variety
Fabric is Garden Variety by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics--showing this weekend at International Quilt Market in Portland. Shipping October 2018.

Maker Valley + Lella Boutique Week

This past week, I got a chance to be a guest designer over at Maker Valley. Maker Valley is a Utah-based design house that specializes in craft-themed apparel and accessories. Throughout the week, Maker Valley posted a series of tee shirt designs featuring my artwork. At the end of the week, those designs were put to a vote--with the winning design(s) being produced/sold on Maker Valley. Check out the winning designs below and get yours preordered now! Get 20% off when you preorder before 4/4/18 using promo code LELLA20 at checkout. (Estimated ship date is 4/23/18.)
The first design is my Scrappy Sunflowers quilt block in muted colors on a Heather grey tri-blend tee--available in crewneck or v-neck.
Scrappy Sunflower tee
The second design features my favorite quilting motto, "When life is scrappy, make a quilt," hand-lettered by Dave at Stately Type. It's printed on a navy cotton/poly tee, also available in crewneck or v-neck. (Unisex sizing.) I can't wait to get my hands on these tees!
When Life is Scrappy tee
We also designed a pretty little collection of enamel pins featuring my signature motifs. Since my fabric collections tend to be floral-centric, we started out with a "Handpicked" floral design in a soft aqua blue. The second is based on my Social Butterfly quilt block. The third is based on my Scrappy Sunflowers quilt block.

Holly (at Maker Valley) and I are just thrilled with how these all turned out and we know you will love them too. Preorder now to reserve your tees and pins--and be sure to take advantage of the 20% discount before it ends. (Use promo code LELLA20 at Maker Valley by the end of 4/3/18.)

"To those you love, give roots and wings."
My Nest fabric collection for Moda Fabrics is finally in shops! Yay! If you're wondering where to find it, you can check your local shop (find a store carrying Moda here) or find it online :)

Little Cottontail

Little Cottontail pillow
When I was little, my Grandpa called me Cottontail. Sweet, right? I knew the instant I decided to design a bunny quilt block that it would have to carry that name too. Because the full quilt version (coming out mid-May) is called Cottontail, this single-block version is called Little Cottontail.
I knew I needed Natalia Bonner to work her custom quilting magic on this and of course, it's perfection! Just check out those beautiful quilting details below.
Little Cottontail pillow
The PDF pattern is available in my shop right now for $5. It includes instructions to finish it as a 22'' x 22'' pillow or wall hanging.
